Why Earned Press Still Beats Paid Press — Even in 2026

Sponsored content has matured. The disclosures are clearer, the formats are slicker, and there are seasons when a well-placed paid feature outperforms a thin editorial mention. But the comparison most founders make is the wrong one.

Earned coverage compounds in four places paid coverage cannot: search results (because real editorial gets indexed by Google as authority), industry calendars (because awards committees recognise mastheads), the secondary press cycle (because real journalists cite other real journalists), and human trust (because every reader knows the difference, even when they say they don't).

Use paid for product launches and time-bound activations. Use earned for who you are. Confuse the two and you spend a brand budget building a campaign and a campaign budget building a brand — and neither asset appreciates.
